Into the Shadow by Christina Dodd

What can I say about “Into the Shadow” about Christina Dodd?  Well, it left me absolutely breathless – in a very good way.  This paranormal romance about a shape shifter and his fiercely independent modern woman is a spectacular story.

Karen Sonnet has years of experience project managing her father’s construction projects in wild, remote locations.  She thought she could handle anything thrown at her.  But she never expected to be rescued from a rockslide in the Himalayas only to find herself kidnapped by her rescuer.  She knows him only as “Warlord,” the leader of a group of mercenaries.  His real name is Adrik Wilder and he has the ability to turn into a panther, thanks to a deal with the devil his ancestor made a thousand years ago.  But that same evil agreement causes Adrik to constantly fight his inner nature.

Adrik and Karen’s relationship is especially contentious at first.  After all, Adrik has kidnapped her and Karen tries to escape at every chance.  Adrik eventually allows Karen to leave the mountains in order to keep her safe from other mercenaries, but by that point he has managed to firmly entrench himself under her skin.

I never knew what to expect out of this book.  Originally, I noticed how the story seemed to take place outside of time, in the desolate mountains without a hint of modern civilization.  But then midway through the book the location changes to modern Arizona.  While the two places are about as disparate as you can get, Dodd manages to naturally weave both of them into the storyline.  Adrik’s character often mimics the background – wild and untamed in the mountains, cultured and sophisticated in Arizona – but without ever losing his central essence.

There are a lot of romance novels where the hero and heroine have animosity between them at the beginning, but Dodd does an excellent job of creating a truly uneasy atmosphere.  Of course, when all the strong emotions eventually turn into mutual affection and love the end result is magical.

This book is the third in Christina Dodd’s Darkness Chosen series, but is the first books in the series I’ve read.  You don’t have to read the first two books (“Scent of Darkness” and “Touch of Darkness”) before this one in order to enjoy the story but I know I’ll go back and catch up on others since I liked Adrik and Karen’s story so much.  However, “Into the Shadow” ends with a big cliffhanger, so I would recommend reading it before the final book in the series, “Into the Flame,” which is next on my reading list!
