Into the Flame by Christina Dodd

I knew as soon as I finished reading and reviewing “Into the Shadow” by Christina Dodd that I would have to read “Into the Flame,” her conclusion to the Darkness Chosen series.  If anything, this book was hotter, sexier, and more exciting than the last and a fulfilling end to the series.

The unfortunately named Firebird Wilder has been hiding some family secrets.  While she’s never shown any paranormal abilities, her brothers all have the ability to shape shift into various predatory animals.  And Firebird herself is viewed as somewhat of a miracle within the family, as the only girl in a family prophesied to exclusively have boys.  To Firebird’s knowledge, the only other people in the world who can shape shift are members of the estranged, and evil, branch of the family.

So when Firebird inadvertently sees her current boyfriend, Doug Black, change into a cougar she panics and flees without telling him about her unexpected pregnancy.  For his part, Doug suspects that Firebird is being abused and held captive by her controlling family and he devises a plan to free her.  Of course, he has to find her first, which is somewhat of a problem.  A few years down the road, Firebird realizes that she needs to see Doug again and tell him about his son.  Naturally, their reunion is contentious at first but an assassination attempt and subsequent near drowning results in a quick restoration of trust in each other.

As the final book in the series, only the first half of the book focused exclusively on Firebird and Doug’s relationship.  The second half of the book included updates and featured the characters from the first three books.  Naturally, well-developed secondary characters always help a book come alive to me, and since most of the secondary characters already had a novel of their own, they had distinct personalities and individual traits.  Although I haven’t read books one and two yet (“Scent of Darkness” and “Touch of Darkness”), the main characters from those books were very interesting, and it made me want to read their own stories.

Firebird and Doug’s relationship has some definite rough patches at first (after all, he feels betrayed that he has missed out on seeing his son grow up), but their love and concern for each other shines through.  Christina Dodd’s “Into the Flame” is a great read.  You don’t have to read the whole series in order to enjoy this book, but it might make it even more fun for you.
